We have focused our humanitarian efforts in further developing the partnership with the European Union, the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), in particular.
ECHO is a key partner for IOM’s humanitarian work globally: we closely cooperate on vital operational and policy issues, as well as support through earmarked contributions in the area of emergency shelters, management of displacement sites, provision of protection assistance, transportation, health, water and sanitation as well as on collecting life-saving data through IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix.
We organize every year the high-level dialogue with ECHO on different humanitarian crises around the world to develop common approaches. Our cooperation extends from forced displacement, joint needs assessments and localization of aid to and humanitarian principles, among others.
The dialogue also extends to relevant directorates (DG DEVCO, NEAR, HOME) and the European External Action Service (EEAS) in an effort to further strengthen the Humanitarian Development and Peace Nexus.
We are also working with ECHO on humanitarian advocacy to draw attention to major crises. We especially advocate for those receiving limited international attention and, more broadly, to increase the access to humanitarian aid.
