IOM and EU Launch Migrant Protection and Reintegration Initiative for the Central Mediterranean Routes
The European Union and IOM have developed a joint initiative to support the efforts of partner countries in Africa to strengthen migration governance and respond to urgent protection needs and unacceptable loss of life of migrants.
Through the Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF), and with contributions from Germany (€48 million) and Italy (€22 million), the EU and IOM will work with local, national and international stakeholders to implement projects in 14 countries in the Lake Chad and Sahel region and neighbouring countries, including Libya.
The actions will aim to strengthen capacities of the African countries to address complex migration; increase protection and assistance vulnerable and stranded migrants; provide voluntary return assistance for migrants wishing to return home; support the reintegration of returnees; promote safe and informed migration; and improve data on migration flows, migrant needs and vulnerabilities.
